Charity praised for excellence in work with children and young people at london ceremony
AN ENTERPRISING Moray youth charity represented Scotland at a UK awards ceremony in London.
Elgin Youth Cafe was short-listed to the final five out of 500 entries for its category in the Children and Young People Now award.
The medal celebrates excellence in work with children and young people.
The youth cafes chairwoman, Fiona Birse, and cafe manager Caroline Saunders attended the ceremony at the Hurlingham Club in Chelsea.
The event featured a presentation by Ed Balls, the secretary of state for children, schools and families .
Ms Birse said: "The criteria for the award was the initiative that had done the most to promote young peoples personal development and help them achieve their potential through informal education and participation in positive activities, especially among disadvantaged and excluded groups.
"Although we lost out to Ealing Council, to a project similar to ours, we were delighted to be recognised as a worthy project and runner up and to receive national recognition for the work our staff, volunteers and young people put into the project."
Elgin Youth Cafe is open three nights each week and on Saturdays for young people aged 11 to 18.
It offers activities and facilities including pool, table tennis, Nintendo Wii, arts and crafts, internet access and Sky TV.
