A new campaign, not to be sniffed at, has been launched by the Grampian Alcohol & Drug Partnerships. The campaign aims to encourage parents to be more aware of Volatile Substance Abuse (VSA) by getting the facts and encouraging them to talk to their children about the risks and dangers associated with VSA.
VSA is not a thing of the past, the Grampian Youth Lifestyle Survey* published in 2008 clearly demonstrates that solvent abuse remains a current concern as many young people are experimenting with and continue to abuse solvents.
Radio stations Northsound and MFR are supporting the campaign by hosting a virtual home on its website. Parents are encouraged to spend five minutes looking around this home for 12 everyday household products which could be abused, learning about the risks and potential dangers as well as gathering other helpful information before filling in a short online questionnaire at:
http://www.northsound1.com/Sectional.asp?id=34127
Everyone who takes part will be entered into a prize draw for a Wii.
All of the information gathered through the questionnaire will be analysed to help evaluate whether parents feel more informed and are thus able to discuss this topic with their children.
The campaign will run until September 14th, 2009 and is funded by the Scottish Government through the multi-agency Alcohol and Drug Partnerships of Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray in partnership with Re-solv Scotland**.
