Police warning over substance misuse
SUSPECTED drugs deaths across the Aberdeen area have hit 20 for the year.
In 2008, there were a total of 42 drug-related deaths across the Aberdeen area.
Today Grampian Police substance misuse co-ordinator Ally Proctor said two out of three drug-related deaths in the Aberdeen area had involved opiates, which include heroin and methadone.
He said: "In relation to drug-related deaths in 2008, toxicology reports showed opiates were found in 67% of cases in the Grampian area.
"This does not mean opiate overdose was the sole cause of death, but contributed to death, most frequently alongside other substances."
He added that mixing drugs with alcohol, as well as each other, caused drug-related deaths in the Aberdeen area and across Scotland.
